Regent Star engine

Black Hole is a payoff only when Stars keep moving

Black Hole turns every Star gained or spent into area damage. Treat it as a payoff for repeated Star churn, not as a standalone damage Power.

Pick it when

  • The deck already gains or spends Stars several times per fight, so Black Hole starts dealing damage without extra setup.
  • Upcoming rooms reward repeated area damage and the deck can afford a Power turn without falling behind on Block.
  • The Regent plan wants passive damage while other cards handle draw, defense, or Star conversion.

Pass or delay when

  • The deck has only one-off Star text and no reliable way to trigger Black Hole more than once or twice.
  • The next threat is a single large hit where a slow Power does not solve the danger turn.
  • Taking another payoff would crowd out the draw, energy, or Block needed to make the Star engine run.

Matchup notes

  • Against multi-enemy rooms, Black Hole can convert normal Star turns into meaningful cleanup damage.
  • Against Aeonglass, it is strongest when one high-value turn triggers several Star events without bloating the card-play count.
  • Against Corrupt Heart, the card needs compressed trigger turns; low-impact extra plays can lose more life than the damage returns.

Common misreads

  • Counting every created card as Star support instead of checking whether Stars are actually gained or spent.
  • Playing the Power before covering the turn’s incoming damage.
  • Drafting Black Hole as the deck’s first Star card and expecting it to create its own engine.
