Defect

A β€” Strong
PowerAncient1 ⚑

Gain 5 Focus. At the start of each turn, lose 1 Focus.

v0.110.0 Beta

Focus increases from 4(5) to 5(6).

The positive Focus window hits more block and damage breakpoints, but the decay timer is unchanged. Still align it with a fight-ending phase.

Official patch notes β†—
Why A-tier:

A huge instant Focus spike that wins short fights outright β€” the decay only matters in drawn-out ones.

Best with:

Defragment, Orb decks, Burst kills

Defect pick decision

Biased Cognition: spend a four-turn Focus window

Biased Cognition is not generic scaling. It buys +4 Focus now, then gives one back at each turn start. The pick is strongest when extra orb output ends the fight before that window closes.

What the timer means

  • Play turn: +4 Focus.
  • Next three turn starts: +3, +2, then +1 Focus.
  • Fourth turn start: the net bonus reaches 0; later turns become a liability.

Pick or play it when

  • The deck already channels useful orbs and +4 Focus changes immediate Block or damage breakpoints.
  • A hallway, elite, or boss phase should end inside the positive Focus window.
  • The deck lacks reliable Focus and needs one compact card to turn orb volume into output.

Delay or skip it when

  • Orb generation is too low for Focus to multiply meaningful output.
  • The fight is expected to outlast the timer and the deck has no second scaling plan.
  • Paying for a Power now prevents the Block or damage needed on the current turn.

Failure modes

  • Playing it on sight in a long fight instead of aligning the timer with the damage race.
  • Treating the STS1 Artifact or Orange Pellets clean-up pattern as available without verifying the current STS2 deck.
  • Drafting more slow setup after taking it, then losing before the Focus spike pays back the tempo.

Matchup use

  • Against Aeonglass, compressed output is valuable, but only if the card-play budget and Wither plan still let the deck finish on schedule.
  • In long multi-phase fights, hold it for the phase where +4 Focus crosses a real survival or kill threshold.
  • Before taking another orb filler such as Chaos, check whether the deck needs more orb volume or one Focus window that multiplies the orbs already in play.
  • Use the card picker to compare whether immediate orb support solves more than another damage, Block, draw, or energy card.

Main-branch evaluation: v0.107.1. In the tracked v0.110.0 Beta notes, Biased Cognition rises from 4(5) to 5(6) Focus; keep that value separate from main-branch ratings.
